Mural painting catches on in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

Painting murals on lifeless city streets can be a fascinating activity, and it may also serve as a link for community oriented activities. The work in the photograph is an exterior wall of the Keystone Art and Cultural Center, located in Lancaster, a small city to the soutwest of Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

Keystone offers a variety of visual arts programs for adults and children. The half block long painting was the result of a project Keystone developed for youth. Nine youngsters from 15 to 17, part of the city’s first Youth Art Board, designed and created the mural, depecting elements of the inner space of Keystone and its surroundings.

The faces which appear along the edges of the mural represent well-known artists, historical figures and residents of the neighborhood. Citizens living nearby were also invited to participate in the project.
