On the way somethings seem to turn other things upsidedown...

Let’s forget about politics, just for a moment; let’s forget about people’s intentions, whether wars and politics of expansion are good or bad; whether what some countries do to expand their interests is justifiable, while similar actions by others are not; let’s not pay attention to the banner headlines on the "war against terrorism." Just for a moment. So we can talk about other things that lie under the surface. Let’s ask a few questions which under present circumstances most observers avoid. For example: How is it possible that a powerful country such as the United States should have so many "holes" in its security system? We don’t know the answer, but certainly many people are asking the same question. How was it possible that even though Washington’s intelligence organizations apparently had clear indications of a possible terrorist attack, September 11th took place; how is it possible that again,as Americans were getting set to celebrate Christmas, and under a president with an apparently more "liberal" approach to internal and external affairs, a similar bungling of intelligence data almost led to another disaster at the hands of a man under suspicion for his connections with terrorists groups?

Although we have absolutely no "inside" information, we wonder whether circumstances of this sort might not be part of a sort of tug-of-war of many diverse and hidden interest groups. At least many people have begun to ask questions such as: Did the September 11 attack help prepare the way for the U.S. invasion of Iraq? Would the country have been invaded if the attack had failed? Could it not be that the notion of attack and counter-attack, tooth for tooth, is just what both sides need (for different reasons)? After years of the present "anti-terrorist" war, the situation in the world does not appear to be on its way to a peaceful solution. On the contrary. The trap for the extremists would appear to be to provoke attacks that then can be used to justify counter attacks. Likewise the continued war efforts serve to keep alive Washington’s long term geopolitical objectives in the Near East. We don’t know the answers to these questions. We merely raise them. If you don’t ask questions, sometimes irritating questions,  the answers will be difficult to come by.
